Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a national program providing free assistance to low-income, elderly, limited English proficiency and disabled individuals who require assistance in preparing their tax returns. Our mission is to provide assistance to individuals who cannot afford the services of a paid professional tax preparer.
The SFSU VITA program has been in operation for approximately 20 years. Each year the program provides volunteers with IRS-certified training sessions during the beginning of each tax season, where students learn about the tax practice and engage themselves in the real world of tax. Our site has averaged well over 1,000 returns prepared each year – in fact, for filing season 2019 our site prepared 1,220 returns. Our preparers, which number approximately 100, are all SFSU student volunteers.
